In this portion of the 16th para (Juz), the story of Zulqarnayn is also mentioned in Sura Kahf. The second part of this para is Surah Maryam, which begins with the story of Prophet Zakariya. This Surah also highlights the miraculous birth of Isa (Jesus), emphasizing the power and greatness of Allah’s capability.

Summary of para 16

Quran para 16 has three parts:

Remaining portion of Surah Al-Kahf.

Complete Surah Maryam.

Complete Surah Ta-Ha.”

Continuation of Surah Al-Kahf

The story of Musa and Khidr continues. Musa asks to join Khidr, who reluctantly agrees but warns him not to ask too many questions. Three things happen: Khidr breaks a boat, kills a young boy, and fixes a wall. Musa gets upset and asks why, but Khidr explains later. He says he damaged the boat because a bad king was taking all the good boats. He killed the boy because he would have made his parents sad if he grew up disobedient. And he fixed the wall because under it was a treasure for some orphans whose father was a good man. God wanted them to grow up first before finding the treasure. Khidr says he did these things because God told him to, and Musa couldn’t be patient enough to wait for the explanation.

Story of Zulqarnayn

The fifth tale recounts the journeys of Zulqarnayn, a righteous king known for his noble deeds. Everywhere he traveled, he left a positive impact. Of particular interest is his endeavor to construct a barrier to protect a tribe facing harassment from Gog and Magog.

Surat Maryam – The mother of Prophet Isa

The 16th Juz carries forward with this early Makkan Surah, revealed before the initial migration to Ethiopia, during the fifth year of the Prophet Muhammad’s mission. It commences with the supplication of Zakariyya, who yearned for a righteous heir despite his old age, childlessness, and concerns about his legacy. This prayer underscores his unwavering faith: “My Lord has never let my prayer go unanswered” (4). Eventually, Allah granted him Yahya, described as “soft-hearted, pure, and devout” (13).

The narrative of Isa’s miraculous conception and birth serves to highlight the might and grandeur of Allah.

Four narratives unfold within these stories: Zakariyya and Yahya; Maryam and Isa; Ibrahim and Azar; Musa and Harun. They depict various familial connections: father and son, mother and son, uncle and nephew, and two brothers. These relationships serve to underscore the significance of human bonds, particularly within the context of prophets and their communities. Faith strengthens these bonds. The Surah ends with positive tidings for the believers: ” The Kind Lord will put love for those who believe and do righteous deeds in people’s hearts”(96).

Surah Taha

Surah Taha provides reassurance to the Prophet and his followers that the Qur’an’s message will ultimately prevail. It recounts the detailed story of Prophet Moses. The surah also describes the opposition of Islam’s adversaries and the consequences they will face as a result of their opposition.
