Quran Para 11 (Yatazeroon )

The latter part of Surat at-Tawbah, that were revealed in the Holy City of Medina have two names for It:AT-TAUBAH and AL-BARA’AT. It is called AT-TAUBAH because it defines the meaning of taubah (repentance) and outlines the requirements for acceptance of taubah. The next surah of juz 11 is surah Yunus. In the opening verse of surah yunus, an invitation is extended to those who find it unique that Allah’s message is conveyed through a human being, namely Prophet Muhammad. Some implicate him of magic but in reality, his message is simply about two fundamental truths.

  1. Allah, the Creator of the universe, is the only rightful deity to be worshipped.
  2. There is an afterlife where everyone will be held accountable for their actions in this world.

These truths are absolute, regardless of acceptance. Accepting them leads to blessings, while denial results in adverse consequences.

Story of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him)

The incident of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) has two aspects:

  1. The incident of being swallowed by a fish, detailed in Surah As-Saffat.
  2. The repentance and seeking forgiveness of his people in his absence, mentioned in Surah Yunus.

Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) became hopeless when his people refused to believe. And he was certain of the imminent punishment of Allah. He left the city of Nineveh and boarded a ship. However, as the ship sailed, it began to sink due to the disobedience of its crew. Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) jumped into the sea, where he was swallowed by a large fish. Allah kept him safe and alive inside the belly of the fish. After a few days, the fish vomited him onto the shore. There, he found that his people, had all left their homes and were fervently repenting and seeking forgiveness from Allah. Due to their sincere repentance, Allah’s punishment was averted from them. Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) returned to them, and they embraced faith.
