The Zulfiqar sword(Arabic: ذُو ٱلْفَقَار) is a renowned weapon in Islamic history and culture, often associated with the Prophet Muhammad and his cousin and son-in-law, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib. Despite its exact history and origins being veiled in legend and myth, the Zulfiqar holds significant importance in Islamic tradition and is seen as a symbol of strength, bravery, and faith.
Meaning of Zulfiqar
Zulfiqar in Arabic إلا ذوالفقار meaning “the spine splitter.” It was the only sword of its time with double edges. During one of the battles, the Prophet Muhammad prayed to Allah for assistance. In response, Allah sent the angel Gabriel, who brought the Zulfiqar sword to Muhammad. The Prophet then gave the sword Zulfiqarto Imam Ali. According to some accounts, following Ali’s successful defense, a voice from the skies, attributed to Gabriel, proclaimed the famous phrase. “There is no hero like Ali; there is no sword like Zulfiqar. لا فتى إلا علي لا سيف إلا ذو الفقار (la fata illa Ali la saif illa Zulfiqar).”

What is the origin of the Zulfiqar Sword?
The earliest known use of the Zulfiqar Sword dates back to around 656. During the lifetime of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. According to Islamic tradition, Muhammad bestowed this weapon upon his son-in-law and cousin, Ali ibn Abi Talib. People universally recognize Imam Ali as the bravest and most skilled swordsman in the history of Islam. From the Battle of Badr to Uhud, Khaybar, and Khandaq, Islamic history records numerous instances where the Lion of Allah, Hazrat Ali, showcased his prowess with the Zulfiqar Sword. Ali’s reputation for courage and skill grew with each battle he fought.
Zulfiqar In Karbala
According to historians, Imam Hassan inherited the Zulfiqar after Hazrat Ali’s death. Who then passed it on to Imam Hussain upon his own death. Imam Hussain wielded the sword in the Battle of Karbala.
