Surah e Yunus (Arabic: يونس) is the 10th chapter of the Quran. It consists of 11 Rukus, 109 verses, 1839 words, and 7589 letters. Surah Jonah was revealed in Makkah, and it opens with Muqattaʻat letters الر. The Surah Yunus, meaning in English is Jonah and it is located in the 11th Juz of the Quran. Surah Yunus, 10th chapter,is named after the Prophet Jonah, whose story is briefly mentioned in one of its verses. This chapter also recounts the narratives of Noah and Moses.

Surah Yunus summary
- Allah alone is the Creator of this universe.
- Ayat 18 of this surah describes that the deities worshipped by the mushrikin besides Allah hold no ability to bring benefit or harm to anyone. Surah yunus ayat 18 urdu translation is
اور وہ خدا کو چھوڑ کر اس چیز کی عبادت کرتے ہیں جو نہ ان کو نقصان پہنچاتی ہے اور نہ ہی ان کو فائدہ پہنچاتی ہے اور کہتے ہیں کہ یہ خدا کے پاس ہمارے سفارشی ہیں کہو کہ خدا کو وہ نعمتیں ہیں جن کو وہ آسمانوں اور زمین میں نہیں جانتا وہ پاک ہے اور وہ ان چیزوں سے بلند ہے جن کو یہ اس کے ساتھ شریک کرتے ہیں (18)
- The deities apart from Allah are not even conscious of being worshipped.
- For the guidance of every nation, Allah sent a Messenger.
- The Quran offers remedies for all the issues faced by humanity.
- The mushrikin adhere solely to conjectures.
- The story of Prophet Hazrat Nuh and his nation.
- The story of Prophet Hazrat Musa, Pharaoh, and his dignitaries.
- No nation benefited from belief after witnessing the punishment except the nation of Prophet Yunus. And No type of miracle will be adequate to make the defiant believe.
- The prohibition against compelling anyone to embrace Islam.
Surah Yunus benefits
There are many benefits of Surah Yunus recitation. A few of them are:
- Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stated, “Whoever recites this chapter will receive a reward equivalent to ten times the number of people who believed in or rejected Jonah, as well as the number of those who drowned with Pharaoh.”
- Abu Abdullah Ja‘far ibn Muhammad stated, “Whoever recites Al Quran surah yunus once every two or three months can be assured that they will not be among the ignorant and unaware. On the Day of Judgment, they will be among those who are close to Allah.”
- Another benefit of Surah Yunus is for those who write it on paper and keep it in their house along with the names of all household members. Any plot or intrigue by any of them would be revealed to the homeowner.
Surah Yunus ayat 81-82 benefits
Surat Yunus ayat 81 82, state:
فَقَالُوْا عَلَى اللّٰهِ تَوَكَّلْنَاۚ-رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِّلْقَوْمِ الظّٰلِمِیْنَ(81)وَ نَجِّنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الْكٰفِرِیْنَ(82)
According to Ibn Kathir’s interpretation, it is narrated from Ibn Abi Hatim that Ibn Abi Salim said: “We have learned that these verses from Surah Yunus, by the command of Allah, have the ability to cure from magic. After reciting these blessed verses, blow on water, then sprinkle it on the head of the afflicted person. Therefore, according to this prescribed method, after reciting these blessed verses once, blow on a patient.”
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi writes in his book “A’maal Qurani”:
“قَالَ مُوْسٰى مَا جِئْتُـمْ بِهِ السِّحْرُ اِنَّ اللّـٰهَ سَيُبْطِلُـهٗ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَايُصْلِحُ عَمَلَ الْمُفْسِدِيْنَ
Write this blessed verse in a clean vessel and drink it daily.”
Upholding Truth and Patience
In surah yunus ayat 85 86 discuss the concept of upholding the truth and patience in the face of adversity. These verses emphasize that truth will ultimately prevail and that believers should remain steadfast and patient in their faith, trusting in Allah’s wisdom and justice.
فَقَالُوْا عَلَى اللّٰهِ تَوَكَّلْنَاۚ-رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِّلْقَوْمِ الظّٰلِمِیْنَ(85)وَ نَجِّنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الْكٰفِرِیْنَ(86)
Believers Expressions of Devotion
In Surah yunus ayat 10, believers are depicted as expressing their gratitude and reverence to Allah. Their prayer will be, “Glory be to You, O Allah!”, acknowledging Allah’s greatness and perfection.Furthermore, believers will greet each other with the word “Peace!”, symbolizing harmony and tranquility in their interactions. Finally, their closing prayer will be, “All praise is for Allah—Lord of all worlds!”, affirming their acknowledgment of Allah’s sovereignty and expressing gratitude for His blessings.
(10)دَعْوَىٰهُمْ فِيهَا سُبْحَـٰنَكَ ٱللَّهُمَّ وَتَحِيَّتُهُمْ فِيهَا سَلَـٰمٌۭ ۚ وَءَاخِرُ دَعْوَىٰهُمْ أَنِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
Human Responses to Divine Guidance
In surat yunus ayat 40- 41 Allah delineates the varying responses of people to His guidance. While some embrace belief in Allah and adhere to His commands, others outrightly reject His decrees. Allah, in His omniscience, is intimately aware of each individual’s disposition towards faith.
وَ مِنْهُمْ مَّنْ یُّؤْمِنُ بِهٖ وَ مِنْهُمْ مَّنْ لَّا یُؤْمِنُ بِهٖؕ-وَ رَبُّكَ اَعْلَمُ بِالْمُفْسِدِیْنَ(40)وَ اِنْ كَذَّبُوْكَ فَقُلْ لِّیْ عَمَلِیْ وَ لَكُمْ عَمَلُكُمْۚ-اَنْتُمْ بَرِیْٓــٴُـوْنَ مِمَّاۤ اَعْمَلُ وَ اَنَا بَرِیْٓءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُوْنَ(41)
In continuation of the discussion on human responses to divine guidance in surat yunus ayat 41 ” “And if they deny you, then say, ‘For me are my deeds, and for you are your deeds. You are disassociated from what I do, and I am disassociated from what you do.” emphasizes the individual accountability before Allah.
