Saba (Arabic: سبأ) is the 34th chapter of the Quran, with 6 Rukus and 54 verses. This Makki surah is named after the mention of the people of Sheba in Surah Saba ayat 15–21, who faced consequences for their ingratitude towards the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah. Both David (peace be upon him) and Solomon (peace be upon him) are mentioned as devout servants who were thankful to Allah. It delves into the narratives of Solomon and David, recounts the tale of the people of Sheba, presents confrontations and admonitions for the unbelievers, and also addresses the assurances concerning the Day of Judgment. They’re rebuked for calling the Prophet (peace be upon him) insane and warned of punishment now and later. Both the concluding verses of this chapter (40–41) and the opening of the next one (verse 1) emphasize the angels’ role as loyal servants of Allah.

Gratitude of David and Solomon

Hazrat David was abundantly blessed by God’s grace. He joined the mountains and the birds in singing praises to God. God softened iron for Hazrat Dawood, instructing him to craft chain mail and armor from it. He bestowed upon Solomon mastery over the wind and a flowing fountain of molten brass.

Surah Saba ayat 13 describes that Numerous jinn served Hazrat Suleiman, constructing palaces, statues, water fountains, and other marvels. If they disobeyed, they faced severe punishment from God. God instructed David’s family to work with gratitude, noting the ingratitude prevalent among most people.

After Solomon’s death, the jinn remained unaware of his passing until a small creature, eating through his staff, caused him to collapse. Had they been aware of Solomon’s death, they would have ceased their labor.

The story of Saba in Quran (People of Sheba)

They declined and turned away. As time passed, they underwent changes, and consequently, the blessings they once enjoyed also changed. Their gardens were flooded, and their houses were destroyed. Due to their ingratitude, God replaced their two lovely gardens with trees bearing bitter fruit and sparse thorny vegetation. As Quran surah saba ayat 16 describes:

فَاَعْرَضُوْا فَاَرْسَلْنَا عَلَیْهِمْ سَیْلَ الْعَرِمِ وَ بَدَّلْنٰهُمْ بِجَنَّتَیْهِمْ جَنَّتَیْنِ ذَوَاتَیْ اُكُلٍ خَمْطٍ وَّ اَثْلٍ وَّ شَیْءٍ مِّنْ سِدْرٍ قَلِیْلٍ(16)

God punishes those who show ingratitude. God granted the people of Sheba easy travel between the towns He had blessed. They could journey safely during both day and night, yet they were insolent and complained about their comfort. The people of Sheba faced consequences for their ingratitude. Their nation ceased to exist, and they were dispersed throughout the land, reduced to mere tales for others to recount.
