Surah al Zilzila (Arabic: الزلزلة), meaning ”earthquake”, is the 99th chapter of the Quran. The surat consists of a total 8 verses, and the surah is found in the 30th Juz/Para. At the beginning, the Surah describes the Day of Judgment, when the earth will shake violently and all beings will be brought before Allah for judgment.
The subject matter of Surah Al-Zalzalah is categorized as follows:
The surah opens with a depiction of the Day of Judgment, when the Earth will quake violently and “cast forth what is within it.” Inspired by God, the Earth will testify to the deeds it has witnessed from mankind.
It also emphasizes the importance of performing good deeds and leading a righteous life while warning about the consequences of disregarding Allah’s commands.
Izaa zul zilatil ardu zil zaalaha
Wa akh rajatil ardu athqaalaha
Wa qaalal insaanu ma laha
Yawmaa izin tuhaddithu akhbaaraha
Bi-anna rabbaka awhaa laha
Yawma iziny yas durun naasu ash tatal liyuraw a’maalahum
Famaiy ya’mal mithqala zarratin khai raiy-yarah
Wa maiy-y’amal mithqala zarratin sharraiy-yarah
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
When the earth is shaken ˹in˺ its ultimate quaking,
and when the earth throws out ˹all˺ its burden,1
and man cries, “What is wrong with it?”—
on that Day the earth will recount everything,
having been inspired by your God ˹to do so˺.
On that Day men will proceed in separate groups1 to be shown ˹the consequences of˺ their deeds.
So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it.
And anyone, who does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
According to Tafsir Noor on Surah Al-Zalzalah, the structure deep within the Earth has rendered our planet prone to frequent earthquakes. Nevertheless, the presence of mountains has transformed the Earth into a nurturing environment essential for human life.
”He created the heavens without any pillars that you may see, and cast firm mountains in the earth lest it should shake with you, and He has scattered in it every kind of animal”. 5

Reflections on Accountability and Ethical Conduct: Surah Zilzal serves as a stark reminder of the accountability each person will face for their actions. Moreover, the Quran (99:7-8) underscores that every action, regardless of its size, will undergo careful examination, thereby urging individuals to diligently strive for righteousness and ethical conduct.
According to a narration attributed to Imam Sadiq, reciting Surah Al-Zalzalah in one’s recommended prayers protects one from the harms of earthquakes, lightning, and other worldly dangers. Upon passing away, God escorts such a person to paradise and invites them to choose their desired abode, saying, “My servant, select any place you wish.”
