Surah At Tariq  (Arabic text: الطارق) english meaning is The Night Come, is the 86th chapter of the Holy Quran. It is a Makki surah and consist of Total 17 verses. The name derived from Verse 1, where the word “Tariq” is mentioned. ١  وَالسَّمَاءِ وَالطَّارِقِ   ”By the sky and the night comer –” At the beginning of this chapter, Allah Almighty swears by the heaven and the brilliant stars He created within it. Then, Allah Almighty states that every soul has a guardian from Him who records its deeds, whether good or evil, for judgment on the Day of Resurrection.

Theme and Subject Matter of Surah At-Tariq

Surah At-Tariq discussed two themes :

  1. every person must face God after death;
  2. that the Qurʾān is a definitive Word that no scheme or strategy of the disbelievers can overcome or thwart.

An Oath from Surat Tariq

وَالسَّمَاءِوَالطَّارِقِ (1)

By the heaven, and by the nightly visitor

In the start of this chapter, God takes an oath on 2 things: the sky and the nightly visitor.

Safeguarding of a Man’s Soul in Surat Tariq

It’s reasonable to believe that protecting the soul encompasses safeguarding both the soul itself and its actions, with the guardian serving as a type of protector. In this context, the verse implies that a man’s soul is protected even after death until the day of resurrection when God reunites bodies with their souls. At that time, the individual will be judged for their actions, which are also protected and preserved by God.

Following are the benefits of Surat Tariq.

  • Reciting Tariq Surat is believed to bring spiritual benefits and blessings. For marriage, individuals may recite this surah with the intention of seeking Allah’s guidance, protection, and blessings for a prosperous and harmonious marital life. It is common for Muslims to include verses from Surat Tariq in their daily prayers and supplications to receive these benefits.
  • Believers recite this surat to seek Allah’s guidance and wisdom when making significant decisions, such as those concerning marriage.
  • Reciting it brings great merit to its reciter on the Day of Resurrection.
