People of Thamud

In the northern parts of the Arabian Peninsula, there lived a tribe known as the Thamud, who were expert builders of beautiful stone homes. Their presence has been proven by archeological discoveries. According to some exegetes, such as Allamah Tabataba’ie, verse 80 of Surah Hijr alludes to the people of Thamud, who rejected the arrival of every apostle who would have advised them to do the right thing.

The Quran refers to the Thamudites as polytheists, to whom Prophet Salih (AS) was sent as a messenger and counselor. They asked God for a miracle, and he granted it to them in the form of a she-camel, whom they were ordered to revere and grant access to their water source once every other day. The day the female camel drank from the water, she gave the tribe’s members an abundance of milk. In spite of all these blessings, they killed her.
