Surah Ar-Rad (Arabic: الرعد) is the 13th chapter of the Quran. It consists of 6 Rukus, 43 verses, 854 words, and 3450 letters. Surat Ar rad is a Madinan surat, and it opens with Muqaṭṭaʻāt letters (المر). This surah addresses the unity of God, the divine message, the Day of Judgment, and retribution. Ar Rad means the Thunder.The surah’s title originates from the word “Ar-Ra’d” (Thunder), mentioned in the 13th verse.The surah’s central theme revolves around the distinction between truth and falsehood, where truth manifests through strength and stability while falsehood reveals itself through weakness. The verses tell us not to be tricked by lies, which are temporary, while the truth lasts forever and is everywhere. Following are the benefits of reciting Surat R’ad:
- If someone frequently recites this surah rad, lightning will not harm them. If they love Ahlul Bayt, they will enter paradise without judgment and will be able to intercede for their loved ones.
- The one who recites this surah will be rewarded as many times as there are clouds passing over the earth, countless and countless; and on the Day of Judgment, they will be counted among those who kept their promise to Allah.
- Among the various benefits of Surah Ar-Ra’d, one is that if this surah is written on paper after performing the Tahajjud prayer and then hung on the door of a tyrant, he would soon meet his demise. People who read this surah will have an easier time when they are judged on the Day of Judgment.
The Universal Submission to Allah
Surah Ar Rad ayat14 and Surah Ar Rad ayat 15, highlight two key points. Firstly, calling upon Allah is meaningful and effective, while invoking others is futile. Secondly, everything in the heavens and the earth, willingly or not, submits to Allah, reflecting the universal obedience to His will.
لَهٗ دَعْوَةُ الْحَقِّؕ-وَ الَّذِیْنَ یَدْعُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖ لَا یَسْتَجِیْبُوْنَ لَهُمْ بِشَیْءٍ اِلَّا كَبَاسِطِ كَفَّیْهِ اِلَى الْمَآءِ لِیَبْلُغَ فَاهُ وَ مَا هُوَ بِبَالِغِهٖؕ-وَ مَا دُعَآءُ الْكٰفِرِیْنَ اِلَّا فِیْ ضَلٰلٍ(14) وَ لِلّٰهِ یَسْجُدُ مَنْ فِی السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضِ طَوْعًا وَّ كَرْهًا وَّ ظِلٰلُهُمْ بِالْغُدُوِّ وَ الْاٰصَالِ(15)
