Surah Al Maarij (Arabic text: المعارج) englishb meaning ”The Stairways” is the 70th chapter of the Quran. The Surah drives its name from the word dhil Ma’arij in verse 3. The sacred chapter consists of 44 verses. The opening verses of the chapter discuss the infliction of torments in this world.
During the early period of the Prophet’s mission in Makkah, when opposition had just begun but had not yet expanded, Allah revealed this Surah. In verse 1, when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) warned the people of Makkah about divine punishment, they started asking among themselves, “Who deserves this punishment?” When they questioned the Prophet (pbuh), this verse was revealed.

A Source of Relief for Captives and Prisoners: The Prophet (S) states that reciting Surah Maarij brings relief to captives or prisoners, ensuring they stay under the surah’s protection until they are reunited with their families.
Reward in Proportion to Devotion and Trustworthiness”: The reward for reciting Surah Maarij is equal to the collective number of people who diligently perform prayers and faithfully protect entrusted property.
Reciting Surah Ma’arij is advised for individuals held captive or detained in prison. Upon completing the recitation, Allah facilitates their release, allowing them to return safely to their families.
