Surah Al Maarij (Arabic text: المعارج)‎ englishb meaning ”The Stairways” is the 70th chapter of the Quran. The Surah drives its name from the word dhil Ma’arij in verse 3. The sacred chapter consists of 44 verses. The opening verses of the chapter discuss the infliction of torments in this world.

During the early period of the Prophet’s mission in Makkah, when opposition had just begun but had not yet expanded, Allah revealed this Surah. In verse 1, when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) warned the people of Makkah about divine punishment, they started asking among themselves, “Who deserves this punishment?” When they questioned the Prophet (pbuh), this verse was revealed.

Key theme of surah Maarij

  • In this Surah, Allah admonished and warned the disbelievers who mocked the Resurrection, the Hereafter, and the concepts of hell and heaven. They challenged the Prophet (pbuh) to prove his words by bringing about the resurrection if what he said was true.
  • The entire Surah addresses this question, stating: “The Resurrection, which they mockingly wish to hasten, is indeed dreadful. When it arrives, it will bring immense suffering to the wrongdoers. In their desperation to evade the punishment, they would be willing to sacrifice their wives, children, and closest relatives, but they will not be able to escape it.”
  • On that Day, mankind’s destinies will be determined solely by their beliefs and actions. Those who reject the Truth, accumulate wealth, and withhold it from the needy will face condemnation to hell. Conversely, those who fear Allah’s punishment, believe in the Hereafter, perform Salah and avoid immoral and wicked deeds. Moreover practice honesty in all their dalings and bear true witness will receive honor with a place in paradise.
