Surah al-kawthar (Arabic: ٱلكَوْثَر) is the 108th surah of the Quran. It contains 3 verses, 10 words, and 43 letters. Ina ataina surah is the shortest surah of the Quran, and it is located in the 30th para. Kawthar literally means “a source of great abundance,plenitude, and it derives from the word kathīr (كَثير: abundant or prolific). Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) received this surah from God after one of his opponents said him abtar (one cut off) because all of his sons had died. During this time, Allah gave Hazrat Muhammad the good news of Hazrat Fatimah, from whom Hazrat Muhammad’s genealogy was descended. Al kausar surah was revealed in her honor and it describes how God bestowed upon Prophet Muhammad a source of immense bounty and plenty. God commands the prophet to Thank Him and offer a camel as a sacrifice in remembrance of this wonderful gift.

Summary of Surah Kouser

The main theme of this Surah is that in it Allah has described the praise of His beloved.

The first verse of this Surah describes, the grace and favor of Allah that He bestowed on His Prophet (ﷺ).
The second verse mentions the command of Allah to Muhammad to offer prayers and sacrifices to thank Allah for his favor.
Deprivation of good for every enemy of Prophet Muhammad(ﷺ).

The Reason for having the name Kausar

Surah Al-Kauthar refers to numerous qualities of this world and the hereafter. And the name of one of the canals in Paradise is Kauser. This word is present in the first verse of Surah; therefore, it is called Surah Al Kawther.

What is kauser?

Anas bin Malik reported from Imam Ahmad that a man exclaimed, “O Messenger of Allah! define Al-Kawthar. The Prophet answered, “My Lord has given me a river in Paradise.” It’s sweeter than honey. and whiter than milk. It includes birds with necks that are as long as carrots.” “O Messenger of Allah!” said Umar. Indeed, the birds will be beautiful.” The Messenger of Allah responded, “The one who eats them (i.e., the people of Paradise) will be more beautiful than them, O Umar.”

Surah kausar benefits

Reciting Surah Kausar ensures that Allah (S.W.T.) will provide water from “The Canal of Al-Kawthar” to the recited person.
Our prophet said that on the Day of Resurrection, my Ummah will gather at this Fountain. [Muslim]. “I will have reached the fountain prior to you.” [Al-Bukhari].
According to Anas bin Malik’s narration, the Prophet declared: “On the night of Mi’raj, when I was walking within Paradise, I noticed a river with tents made of pearls placed on its two banks.” What is this, O Gabriel?” I questioned. He responded, “That is the Kawthar which Your Lord has given to you.” Look! It smelled like pungent musk.

Samra ibn Jundab I narrated that I heard the Prophet state, “I’m your predecessor at the Lake-Fount.”
According to Abu Huraira’s narration. The Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) stated, “There’s a garden from the gardens of heaven between my home and mine pulpit, and my pulpit is on the lake Fount” (Al-Kauthar).
According to a hadith, surah kauser recitation protects newborns and infants.
Reciting this Surah will give you a reward equivalent to ten times the quantity of cattle that are slaughtered on Eid-ul-Adh’ha annually as long as the Day of Resurrection.
Surah Al-Kathar emphasizes the value of showing thanks (shukr) to Allah for all of His blessings. Faith is fundamentally based on gratitude and it is reinforced by reciting this Surah kauser.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيم

(إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ ﴿1﴾ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ ﴿2﴾ إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ ﴿3

Bismillaah hir Rahmaanir Raheem

Innaa a’tainaa kal kauthar

Fasalli li rabbika wanhar

Inna shaani’ aka huwal abtar

Surah Kausar translation in English

The translation of Surah kausar in english is:

”Indeed, We granted you (O Prophet) the fount (abundant), so pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.”
