Al-Balad (Arabic: البلد),  meaning the city, is the 90th chapter of the Quran.. It is found in Para/Juz 30th of the Holy Quran and consists of a total 20 verses (Ayats). This is a powerful chapter from the Quran that contains several important lessons for believers. At the start of the verses, Allah Almighty takes an oath in Mecca, highlighting its immense significance.

Surah Balad depicts the journey of humanity on earth, exploring the complexities of life’s challenges and the blessings bestowed upon individuals. The Surah also highlights noble deeds such as aiding the less fortunate by feeding the hungry and caring for orphans.

The theme of the Quran surah Al Balad is

The theme is to elucidate the true status of humanity in the world and the world’s relationship to humanity. Moreover It emphasizes that God has revealed to humanity the paths of good and evil, endowed them with the means to discern and follow these paths. Ultimately, it is up to each individual’s effort and judgment to choose the path of virtue and attain happiness, or to follow the path of vice and face destruction.

At the start of the verses, Allah Almighty swears by Mecca, acknowledging its esteemed status. Mecca, as the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, witnessed its conquest and establishment by him for Islam through divine guidance. This transformation elevated it into a city of monotheism and faith.

One of the noble acts encouraged by these verses is to support an orphaned relative. According to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),

I and the one who takes care of an orphan will be in Paradise like these two, and raised his index and middle fingers together” (Sahih Al-Bukhari 6005).
