Surah al-Alaq (Arabic: العلق) is the 96th chapter of the Quran. It contains 1 ruku, 19 verses, 72 words, and 288 letters. surah al alaq, meaning is The blood clot, and this sura is located in the 30th para (juz) of the Quran. The Sura derives its title from the word “alaq” mentioned in the second verse. This sura, also known as Surat Iqra (سورة إقرا), means ‘Read’’. Surah 96 of the Quran was revealed to Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) in Makka in the Hira cave (غارحرا). This chapter is among the four chapters, referred to as ‘Azā’im (عَزائِم), which include a verse that mandates a compulsory sajdah (سَجدَة: prostration).

This chapter emphasizes God’s role as the creator and overseer of humanity, providing them with knowledge. It reassures the Prophet, instructing him to recite the Quran without worry, as God will reveal it to him divinely. Surat al-Alak also admonishes those who hindered the Prophet from praying and forewarns them of a severe punishment to come.

Surat alaq recitation while traveling serves as a protective measure against accidents. When recited over a treasure, it ensures its safety. (Fawaid-e-Qur’an)
“Those who recite surah alaq repeat daily will acquire knowledge, intelligence, and improved memory.” (Aamal-e-Qurani p429-431)
“When Surat Iqra is recited over a storehouse or repository, God will safeguard it from spoilage or theft until the owner retrieves its contents.”
“Anyone embarking on a sea journey and reciting al-iqra surah will be protected from drowning.” (Tafsir al-Burhan, vol. 5, p. 695)
The initial Revelation to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) comprised the first five verses of Sorah alaq,wherein it was revealed:Recite, O Prophet, in the name of your Lord who created – created man from a clinging clot. Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by the pen – taught man what he did not know.

The Al-Alaq surah divides into two parts: the first section comprises verses 1–5, while the second section constitutes verses 6–19. Islamic scholars widely concur that the initial part represents the very first revelation to Muhammad in 610.
