Main Theme
At first glance, the opening words of this Surah suggest that Allah is displeased with the Prophet (pbuh) for treating the blind man with indifference while giving exclusive attention to the prominent chiefs. However, an objective reading of the entire Surah reveals that the displeasure is actually directed towards the disbelieving Qureysh. Their arrogant attitude and indifference led them to reject the message of truth with contempt.
Circumstances of Revelation
Initial Perspective
According to the first viewpoint, the Prophet was delivering a sermon in the mosque, addressing questions from Muslims and persuading those not yet converted to Islam. Amidst this, a poor blind man named ‘Abdullāh ibn Umm Maktūm rushed in, sat beside the Prophet, and repeatedly interrupted the speech. This caused the Prophet to become upset, frown at him, and turn away. Subsequently, God revealed Surah Abasa to the Prophet, admonishing him and suggesting that perhaps the blind man sought purification.
Second Perspective (تَرك الأَولیٰ)
Conversely, other Quranic scholars completely dismiss this interpretation. They firmly believe that neither the Prophet nor his impeccable household committed any sin or error, nor did they engage in what is known as tark al-awlā (تَرك الأَولیٰ).
Tark al-awlā is considered an action that, while not sinful or erroneous, is deemed preferable to avoid. There are differing perspectives on whether certain prophets, like Adam, Moses, and Jonah, engaged in such behavior. Conversely, some Muslims assert that prophets of God and the Infallibles never engaged in tark al-awlā. Nevertheless, according to the latter group, the individual who frowned and turned away was not the Prophet.
